No Abortions with My Tax Dollars!

I have just taken a stand with Concerned Women for America by signing their national petition supporting a Congressional move to permanently prohibit tax dollars from being used to fund abortion services -- either in the U.S or abroad.


With a new conservative Congress in place, this is the very best opportunity to champion the rights of the unborn and strike a serious blow against the abortion culture that has gripped our nation for decades.

The petition is to put pressure on Congress to repeal the executive order already signed by the President. The ex.order would allow for women to have an abortion as a means of birth control, and I am not okay with that. We, as tax-payers, have long been paying for abortions in the manner to which you refer (both the mom's & baby's lives are at stake) because of a government program called Medicaid. However, taxpayers also pay for abortions in another way: D & C's or D & E's. I have a friend who was on Medicaid during her pregnancy. Somewhere along the way the pregnancy had complications. Her doctor told her he "thought" she was having a miscarriage. He told her to go to the hospital so he could perform the D&C. She asked him if he was 100% certain the baby was no longer alive, and he couldn't say yes or no. My friend elected to just wait and see what happened. A few days later her body miscarried on its own. But, had my friend gone through with the D&C, she would have in essance been having an abortion because no one knew for certain when the baby stopped developing and died. I'm sure there are countless women that this type of thing happens to (D&C or D&E but doc not 100% certain baby is dead). So you see, there are always exceptions (and in this case, the exceptions have been in place for a while). I just can't sit idly by knowing that my money is funding something that is so horrific. Abortions out of medical necessity is one thing, but when it's used as a "quick solution" to an unwanted pregnancy, out of good conscience I can't sit idly by.

Wow, so this legislation that you are petitioning for would not allow any D&C's or D&E's? That is scary to me because these are in fact medical procedures that are used after a baby has died but a woman's body has not miscarried yet. There are circumstances in which these are necessary. In face, my sister in law had a D&C after her baby was born b/c of remaining tissue. If I had a miscarriage and the baby's death was confirmed via multiple ultrasounds and testing, I would hope that having a D&C would be an option for me if my body didn't miscarry on its own (which happens). I just can't imagine calling a D&C or D&E after a baby's death an abortion.

You must have misunderstood what I wrote. I am saying that the legistlation is for an abortion in terms of birth control; to end an unwanted pregnancy. The legislation is already in place and has been for many years in terms of D&C and D&E. I am not against those (I clearly wrote that when it's for medical necessity, that's one thing). I am against using abortion as a means of birth control. There are many other options for women and I know from experience that making a poor decision to abort in haste can have a lifetime of consequences.

Oh, you're right, I guess I did misunderstand. I read your response as that all D&C's and D&E's were abortions. I guess my bigger concern with the petition and the legislation it calls for is that it doesn't seem to differentiate between medically necessary abortions and those that are optional (I went to their website and didn't see specifics).

Oh, and by the way, I'm glad that we're good friends and can have intelligent discourse about such a controversial topic!

I deleted my first comment b/c some preemie mom friends pointed out that one of the statements could be extremely misunderstood in a very painful way for them. Since that was not my intentions, of course, out of respect for them I thought it best to delete.

I understand what you mean about being misunderstood. It's difficult to have a "debate" without being face-to-face. Funny thing is, it sounds to me as if we actually agree with each other but because we aren't talking in person, we aren't able to clarify our views (sort of like going from point A to point C and missing B). Anyway, I agree that I am glad we are friends for so many more reasons than this! I was just thinking the other day how it amazes me that it's been 2 years since I walked into your classroom to intern. Time's flown by! :)
